Abstract
This thesis explores the integration of biophilic design into urban planning within the densely populated city of Hong Kong. Biophilic design emphasizes incorporating natural elements into urban environments to enhance human well-being and promote ecological sustainability. The study investigates the challenges and opportunities of applying biophilic principles in Hong Kong’s spatial planning, where high population density and limited land availability pose significant barriers.
Using a qualitative methodology, the research analyses the perspectives of urban planners and policymakers. It identifies rigid zoning ordinances and insufficient policy support as primary obstacles to biophilic urbanism. The thesis advocates for flexible regulatory frameworks, such as performance zoning, to encourage the inclusion of green infrastructure in urban development. It also highlights the importance of clear policy directives, economic incentives, and community engagement in fostering biophilic initiatives.
The findings contribute to sustainable urban development by offering practical recommendations for integrating biophilic design into Hong Kong’s planning practices. This research not only addresses the city’s unique challenges but also provides insights applicable to other urban contexts facing similar constraints.
