Abstract

Sports have been argued to have multiple positive effects, in both Western societies as in development contexts. This thesis analyses the use of sports activities, and, more specifically, how so-called Sport for development and Peace (SDP) programmes can contribute more to peacebuilding. The thesis relates the aims of SDP programmes to the theories and expectations of change in local, social peacebuilding programmes and how the SDP programmes actually impact change in peacebuilding settings. Through a qualitative study, including cases across different context the intentions and results of programmes have been analysed, incorporating representatives of different implementation levels. The results indicates positive contributions of sports to peacebuilding programmes, such as the engagement of new participants in the process and the opportunity to build relations across communities. However, there are several conditions, limitations and constraints that have to be considered in order to create the positive contribution of sports. The dedication of all organisations active in a peacebuilding process make all the difference for the impact created. Playing as a team makes all the difference.
