Abstract

The perks of being a wallflower is an epistolary novel written by Stephen Chbosk. Over a decade after the novel was published, Chbosky scripted and directed the film adaptation of his story. Fifteen-year-old Charlie is the main character in this coming-of-age story. During his first year of high school, he struggles with making new friends while dealing with multiple traumas. The story includes heavy subjects like abortion, drugs, unaccepted homosexuality and sexual abuse. In my thesis I analyse three aspects of the adaptation to anwswer the question in which ways the epistolary novel was adapted into film. The first aspect is the narrative, the second is an analysation of the focalization and the voyeuristic element of the adaptation. Finally I analysed the differences between the novel and film on the subject of tone and mood.
