Abstract

Turkish migrants form a large minority in the Netherlands. Although present for decades, this group is still discriminated against. A potential, but unexplored, cause for this discrimination is accent. The current study aimed to investigate whether a Turkish accent in Dutch influenced the chance of getting hired. Participants listened to one out of three recordings (slight accent, strong accent, native accent) of the same job interview pitch. A questionnaire, filled in by 90 respondents, was used to find differences within the evaluation of variables such as status, affect, solidarity and hireability. Although the results show that the accent strength manipulation worked, no significant differences were found for variables pointing at discrimination based on accent. A Turkish accent had no negative influence on the chance of getting hired, and therefore seems not to matter in a business setting.
