Abstract

In this thesis, I focus on right-wing populist discourses regarding migration. I study those in the European Union and in the Netherlands. The problem from which I start is the unfair and inhumane treatment of migrants. When their access to a safe and secure place is based on incomplete policies, it is mainly humanitarian aspects that are being violated. Inhumane discourses and policies only reinforce this. Space for different discourses can be problematic. Here, I specifically focus on the notions of securitisation and legitimisation. The notions of bordering, ordering and othering are central in this thesis as well and can be seen in migration policy, but also in the right-wing populist discourse on migration. Right-wing populist political parties in the Netherlands now mostly have an indirect influence on migration policy. This influence of the right-wing populist discourse, whether big or small, on migration policies can heavily influence the lives of migrants. It should always be avoided that migrants are put into unfair situations, especially when these situations are inhumane as well.
