Abstract

While the influence of multinational corporations is on the rise, the consequences of this rise are not clear yet. What is the role of multinationals in the global order, and what power do they draw on? Through an examination of Neoliberal Institutionalism, Constructivism, and Global Capitalism, differences in power in theory are explored. In this research, assumptions of Global Capitalism are tested to find out which powers multinationals draw on to affect the global order. This is done through a qualitative content analysis of a case study. The case study chosen for this research is the Coca-Cola Company. The content analyzed for this study includes annual reports and policy documents of the Coca-Cola Company, as well as public reports such as news and scientific articles. This case study shows how material and non-material types of power are used both in isolation and in combination with each other. This supports the assumption of Global Capitalism, which assumes that MNCs draw power from structural power that can be exerted through material and non-material types of power.
