Abstract
The Pentagon is very worried about the threat that China poses if it surpasses
the U.S. as global leader in arti cial intelligence research and development.
Some have called it the `AI Cold War', sometimes even including
doom scenario's of wars fought with superintelligent AI [1]. In this thesis,
two main topics are researched. First, the scenarios of a future of technological
singularity and arti cial superintelligence (ASI) are researched and
discussed. It is considered how realistic the development of ASI in the (near)
future is, and if so, how long the development could still take. After the research
it is concluded that, in the author's opinion, a future creation of
general- or superintelligence is less likely or near than some other authors
make it appear to be.
Then, several methods of- and motives behind propaganda regarding the
con
ict with China used in present-time by the U.S. government, are compared
to propaganda methods and motives used by the U.S. government
during the Cold War era. Two main similarities are identi ed: the dualistic
narrative of the United States and its opponent, where the former is portrayed
is culturally, politically and morally superior to the latter, and the
in
ation and exaggeration of the enemy threat.
