Abstract

This thesis examines metamodernity in Zoe Thorogood's 2022 graphic novel ‘It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth’. The oscillation between irony and sincerity, combined with the work's autofictional character, places the novel in a metamodern framework. The first chapter of this research focuses on autofictionality, and examines how Thorogood explores her place in the world by using self-reflexivity and identity fragmentation. The second chapter then analyzes how the metamodern oscillation between irony and sincerity strengthens the graphic novel’s narrative. Comparing and combining these chapters, the thesis then concludes on the main research question concerning how the metamodern oscillation between irony and sincerity contributes to and reinforces the autofictional character of ‘It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth’. The analysis of the novel, supported by the theories of various academics from the fields of metamodernism, autofiction, and graphic narratives, highlights the significance of metamodern elements in contemporary graphic narratives.
