Abstract

In recent years, tourism and recreation has grown in the Netherlands, bringing both positive and negative effects. This research aims to investigate the positive and negative effects of tourism and recreation on the degree of resident benefit on the village of Voorst and Bussloo area, answering the following question: To what extent do tourism and recreation create a difference in the degree of resident benefit in Voorst and Bussloo area? To address this, a qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing the grounded theory method. This involved observations and interviews with residents and tourist-recreational entrepreneurs in both Voorst and Bussloo area. The results have revealed that both residents and tourist-recreational entrepreneurs in both Voorst and Bussloo area currently predominantly experience positive impacts and consequently benefit from tourism, with no significant disparity in the degree of resident benefit between the two areas. However, this may shift in a negative direction due to the prospective establishment of large-scale tourist-recreational facilities, inadequate communication, and a lack of participation. Therefore, the recommendations advocate adopting a community-based approach, emphasizing effective communication and active participation, with the municipality taking a leadership role and developing facilities of a small-scale nature, aligning with the distinctive characteristics of both areas.
