Abstract

The digital world is progressively prominent in people’s daily tasks and habits. People spend most of the day online, getting exposed to a never-ending amount of information. The increasing popularity of social media makes online fake news more easily retrievable than it once was. Therefore, it is relevant to investigate whether individuals’ use of social media platforms can affect their ability to detect false information online. This thesis investigated whether the use of TikTok and the format of information affect fake news detection. With this being the purpose, an experimental survey was conducted. The data from 191 survey respondents was used for the analysis. The results indicated that TikTok use and format of information did not influence subjects’ ability to detect fake news. This thesis contributed to both fake news and social media behavior literature by providing important consideration to the related fields.
