Encounters in Scripted Space explores the influence of institutional and design scripts on the encounter. The public interiors of the city offices of ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Utrecht, and Dutch public space during the first COVID-19 lockdown edged the case studies. Theoretically guided by the Production of Space by Lefebvre (1974), and the dramaturgical framework of Goffman (1956), two scenarios of encountering in scripted spaces are provided. As a methodology, 12 semi-structured interviews with employees and security guards were conducted. The interview guides were prepared according to the outcome of a policy document analysis, an field observation, and an architectural analysis. For the COVID-19 case, news reports concerning the social impact of the lockdown published by de Volkskrant, NRC and, de Correspondent were analyzed to search for recurring themes. Both cases suggested a more complex relation between scripted spaces and the encounter then the hypothesized dominance of scripts over encounters. Even though spaces scripted for activities other than social ones were difficult for the encounter, the dominance of script over the encounter seemed to be ambiguous. Difficult human emotions caused disobedience of scripts. Last, the influence of contemporary technological developments affected the encounters occurrence rather than influencing it.en_US
