Abstract

This bachelor's thesis researched the overlap between queer activism and environmentalism and the intersectionality surrounding it in young, queer people, an under-highlighted part of society. Researching participants using a case-study approach, their motivations and barriers were taken into account, together with a theoretical background on queer history, queer theory, intersectionality and environmentalism. By building up on Cortese’s theory, who researched queer activists in 2015, three more types of activists were added onto the three existing ones to explain activists active in both queer activism and environmentalism. Queer activism was often influenced by personal barriers and motivations, while environmentalism was often motivated and barriered by external elements. The activists’ own queer identity gave them a unique positionality in their activism, and often motivated them to be more active overall, mainly motivated by their marginalized position in society.
