Abstract
This paper considers the ways in which entertainment media consumers assess realism in order to account for the ways in which queer identity is depicted in works of Cartinelli fanfiction. While the consumption and production of femslash fanfiction can serve as a way in which writers can redefine patriarchal and heteronormative entertainment media, it is also a site on which conformity to the social realities of issues related to queerphobia and sexism occurs. This work aims to make the reader aware of the ways in which depictions of queer identity and relationships in works of derivative fiction relies on real world expectations surrounding the experiences of non-heterosexual minority group members. In doing so, a contribution will be made to the literature on fanfiction in a more academic context, primarily with regards to femslash fanfiction specifically.
