Abstract
In order to provide more information about other-initiated repair in two Mandarin Chinese dialects (Sichuanese Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin), this thesis first introduces the related backgrounds, later it demonstrates how the corpora were established and methodology we used through quantitative and qualitative analysis for the study. In the result section, seven turn formats of other-initiated repair in both Sichuanese Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin are introduced and one specific turn format—repeat format—is analyzed in detail. The result suggest that bare repeat formats and a-suffixed repeat formats serve different functions in these two dialects. In other words, repeat format without the a particle display nonalignment and bare repeat format serves as an understanding check in Taiwanese Mandarin, in contrast, a-suffixed repeat format is recognized as understanding check and repeat wit! hout a pa rticle display surprise, disbelief and nonalignment in Sichuanese Mandarin.
