Abstract

Organisational structures and quality of work have been researched extensively, but the relationship between the two has been substantially less explored. Therefore, this master's thesis examined the relationship between two different organisational structures (socio-technical structure and machine bureaucracy structure) and quality of work, measured by job characteristics (autonomy, variety, skill use, workload and complexity). In addition, it was examined whether more work experience moderates the effect of organisational structures on quality of work. No statistical evidence of a moderating effect was found. However, multilevel analyses revealed that all elements of quality of work were rated higher in the socio-technical structure than in the machine bureaucracy structure. It can therefore be concluded that the structure of an organisation affects the quality of work and that the two are interrelated. These findings suggest that the starting point for improving the quality of work is to look first at the constraints or opportunities presented by an organisation's structure.
