Abstract
In the present study factors that influence BMI were examined, in particular physical activity,
physical inactivity, healthy and unhealthy eating. The sample included participants recruited
through primary and secondary schools. 170 males and 200 females (Age: M = 10.170 years,
SD = 0.046) were recruited through primary schools, 160 males and 214 females (M = 12.241
years, SD = 0.045) were recruited through secondary schools. Eating behaviour and activity
levels were assessed through the use of accelerometers and self-report questionnaires
administered via mobile telephones. Multiple regression analyses indicated that increases in
physical activity are associated with increases in BMI for older females and decreases in BMI
for younger females. Physical activity did not predict changes in BMI for males. When
examining the consequences of weight related behaviours it is important to realise an increase
in BMI during middle adolescence is expected for adolescent females.
