This thesis describes how individuality can be found in dystopian literature through the rebellion of the main character against the repression set by the dystopian system in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go. Each novel will discuss its dystopian background, the inner workings of its system, if and how its main character rebels against the system, and what result this rebellion reached. A final comparison of the three novels will provide an overview of how individuality is represented in dystopian literature. Keywords: Dystopian literature, individuality, repression, rebellion, system, dystopian state, George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale, Kazuo Ishiguro, Never Let Me Go.en_US
