| dc.description.abstract | This thesis focuses on motivations that lead migrants to invest remittances in their countries of origin. Remittances are an important economic resource for developing countries, three times bigger than the Official Development Assistance (ODA). According to some experts and development cooperation actors, most of remittances are wasted by families and not involved in productive activities. Following an optimistic view on migration and development, it is important to find new instruments to involve remittances in the development process. Starting from the literature on motivations of migrants to remit money to the family, the research looks at motivations behind a further step. The study follows a qualitative research method. Eighteen Bangladeshi migrants living in two different residence countries (the Netherlands and Italy) have been interviewed for the research. The analysis takes in consideration more microeconomic factors than the macroeconomic ones, and the importance of the migration context. Ten determinants for investments are investigated (education, income, migration project, family and social networks, institutional and ethnical social structures, migration context, macroeconomic situation, gender, a psychological dimension, the role of the state). The thesis wants to give a contribution to elaborate more effective strategies on the productive use of remittances.
