dc.description.abstractThis research uses the model of Europeanization by Radaelli (2003), Börzel and Risse (2003) and similarly used by Kalata (2009), to explain how "misfits" can be used to explain problems in the organization of and participation in ESDP-missions by the UK. The research uses a 'top-down' approach, together with rational institutionalist and sociological institutionalist logics to explain how these misfits have shaped policy responses. Misfits are recognized to exist in UK-NATO relations, EU-UK relations, National Strategy and Political Culture, Defence Expenditure and Troop Availability. This is followed by a analysis of the degree of reduction of the misfits over time by adaptation at the domestic level. The role of intervening variables; Norm Entrepreneurs, Political Culture, Formal Institutions and Veto Points, is explored to investigate their roles of socialization and persuasion in this case. The level of Europeanization of national policy is small due to the negative influence of Atlanticism and aversion to supranationalism in the UK, though these are not the main reasons more ESDP-missions were not set up.en_US
