| dc.description.abstract | Manuscript Nijmegen, University Library, Hs 303 is a sixteenth century devotional miscellany from the St. Agnes convent in Arnhem. According to its colophon the manuscript was written in that same convent by sister Alberta van Middachten to be used in the infirmary. It can provide us with more information about the book culture of a late medieval women's convent and the daily life of its sick members, which makes it a valuable book that requires more research. This thesis aims to investigate a part of the manuscript and more specifically the calendar on ff. 13v-47r. It differs from other late medieval calendars due to its content and has vastly been expanded compared to Robertus van Coelen's Costelike scat der geesteliker rijckdoem, a printed book on the indulgences, wich Alberta used for the texts on folio's ff. 2r-51r. The critical transcription of the calendar that I made for this study gave me the opportunity to compare the calender in Costelike scat with its adaption in Hs 303. Costelike scat also contains a calendar, but it has been adapted to the contents of the book, wich means that indulgence symbols have been added to it. The calendar in Hs 303 has some extra features in addition to the symbols, such as spiritual meditiations for every day and added saints, to transform it from a liturgical calendar to one that covers 365 days. The appearance and contents of the calendar showed that it has been adapted to the sick. This adaption enables them to live their lives in the spiritual footsteps of Christ and takes away the fear of their imminent death. | en_US |
