dc.description.abstractFreight transportation is an essential part of any economy. It is also relevant to Rijkswaterstaat since much of the freight transported in the Netherlands makes use of the highways and waterways that Rijkswaterstaat manages. Despite its importance, many policy makers and spatial planners are more focussed on passenger transportation. The literature gives multiple explanations for this lack of focus on freight transportation. Among these explanations is the complexity of freight transportation, which is in contrast to passenger transportation very heterogenous: coal, for example, is generally very differently transported than vaccines. This complexity is also expressed in the spatial distribution of freight transportation activities. A concept that could help in better understanding this spatial distribution of freight transportation is the freight landscape. This research explored the concept of the freight landscape in the provinces of Utrecht and Flevoland. This was done by conducting a mixed methods approach that combined elements of GIS, a focus group and a content analysis. The research found many relevant aspects that could be of use when planning for freight transportation. However, the usefulness of the concept is best found in strategic planning, and not operational asset management.
