dc.description.abstractThe goal of the current study was to research whether it is possible to predict album sales based on a number of online metrics like social media data and number of album reviews. This was inspired by earlier research to predict box office success of movies. Research on those metrics for box office success was reviewed. Out of this came a few overarching themes and accompanying metrics that turned out to be important indicators of box office success for movies, and were translated for a music context. As it turns out, quite a few of these indicators were significant predictors of album sales, and a model could be be formulated that explains and predicts a bit over half of the total variance in album sales among bands in the dataset. Because of the exploratory nature of this research, a lot of avenues for further research where suggested.en_US
