This study was aimed at getting insight in how and why social and traditional media organizations are governing fake news. To study this, a deductive content analysis was performed based on a conceptual model that was developed following literature. This conceptual model consisted of five dimensions. The ‘commitment’, ‘structure and procedures’, and ‘interactive’ dimensions were used to examine how social and traditional media organizations govern fake news. The ‘regulation’ and ‘attitude towards fake news’ dimensions were used to examine why social and traditional media organizations govern fake news. This was studied in the context of The Unites States, and more specially the years 2020 and 2021, during which fake news was spread on a large scale regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and the US elections. With this research and case design, this study compared the fake news governance of Twitter as a social media organization, and The Washington Post as a traditional media organization.en_US
