Although the importance of shame proneness in the etiology of psychopathology is increasingly acknowledged, research on shame proneness has been hampered by difficulty with its assessment and the consequent lack of measurement diversity. To complement the existing measures of shame proneness, we developed a new kind of measure that allows behavioral assessment of shame proneness in a naturalistic setting. Specifically, the games, Truth & Dare and Would You Rather, were developed to assess proneness to anticipatory and reactive shame and its opposite, authenticity. In Truth & Dare, Truth refusal, refusal to talk about perceived flaws, and Dare refusal, refusal to act in a flawed manner, were measured. In Would You Rather, Switch, conformity to others’ position, Attack, criticism of others’ position in return, and Defend, assertion of one’s position, in the face of others’ negative evaluations were measured. The in-game responses were evaluated by examining their associations with self-reports of shame proneness, behavioral authenticity, and psychological symptoms. Although hypothesized associations were partially supported, the developed games offer an important first step toward behavioral assessment of shame proneness and authenticity.
