Bruce Springsteen is known for writing songs about the experiences of the American working class. In this thesis, I analyze the significance of the themes mobility and place in Springsteen’s lyrics, and how these themes contribute to Springsteen’s perspective on American culture. There are a number of questions that I aim to answer: What is Springsteen’s perspective on the Open Road and on the American Dream? What do the recurring metaphors of the car and the road signify in his lyrics? Does his perspective change over the years? How do Springsteen’s lyrics fit in the genre of road narratives, among the likes of Walt Whitman, John Steinbeck, and Jack Kerouac?en_US
