There is a growing realisation in modern scholarship that 'epideiktika', the label used for the ninth book of the Anthologia Graeca, is insufficient and anachronistic. Despite this realisation, the epigrams in this book are usually referred to in modern scholarship with this label without critical assessment what it means. This research aims at examining specifically the Hellenistic epigrams in this book outside the old paradigm of 'epideictic epigram' and assessing the epigrams and their (sub)genres on their own merit. This thesis also takes into consideration the theoretical background of 'epideixis'; how our view of the epigrams is formed by the byzantine anthologies; and how more contemporary insights can be gained from an examination of Hellenistic epigram papyri.en_US
