In this research, I perform a close reading analysis of Naiko, a photo series by Lana Prins featuring photographs of (dried) flowers and rope bondage to determine the degree in which the male gaze, as explained by Laura Mulvey in "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" (2006), is present. With the use of semiotics, I analyse the visual elements of the photographs to determine whether different elements of the voyeuristic gaze, including objectification, fetishism and sadism, are present within the series. The way in wich I combine theory to my case study is inspired by how Annette Kuhn does this in The Power of the Image (1985). Additionally, I use my analysis to interpret whether this photo series can be regarded as sex positive or not, for depictions of sexuality are often not neutral in the message they send out.en_US
