In this EEG-study we analyzed if the Belgian Dutch particle 'er' functions as an expectancy monitor. We set up a cloze-task and a grammaticality task to create the audio stimuli for the main experiment and we performed a memory task for long-term consequences. We compared sentences without 'er' to sentences with 'er', but also to sentences with disfluencies, which have been demonstrated to function as unpredictability cues. The main difference is that 'er' is part of the lexicon and disfluencies are not, they indicate production difficulty.en_US
