The last couple of years, gentrification has also received a lot of attention in the Netherlands. Interestingly, it is used by the government as a strategy for solving problems of segregation and revitalising disadvantaged neighbourhoods. This is known as smart or positive state-led gentrification. The government however seems to be embracing a middle class vision for the city, instead of encompassing a wider social base. This document investigates how ‘in between’ residents of Middelland and Katendrecht, Rotterdam, experience the changes due to gentrification and how this is influenced by different governmental policies. Qualitative data was collected by means of a document study combined with interviews in both neighbourhoods, analysed with grounded theory. Respondents in both Middelland and Katendrecht reported the changes as a positive development for the neighbourhood and were not a motivation to leave. The policy obtained was found to influence these experiences, especially on Katendrecht. Here the positive gentrification policy was found to fail in involving and representing all residents. Middelland residents feel well represented by the government but would like to see increased residential involvement.en_US
