Abstract
In de regio Twente wordt er in veel dorpen op hoog niveau gevolleybald. Binnen de geografie bestaat er volgens Bale (1988) de potentie om via onderzoek naar sport geografisch begrip van regio's te verbreden en te verdiepen. Met dit onderzoek is getracht bij te dragen aan de vervulling van deze potentie. Aan de hand van de zelfdeterminatietheorie rondom motivatie is er een brug geslagen tussen de sport en de geografie omdat motivatie binnen verschillende culturen op verschillende manieren tot stand kan komen. Zo is er onderzocht hoe de motivatie bij de Twentse volleybalsters tot stand kwam en welke invloed plaats hier op had. De facetten van plaats waren in dit onderzoek de cultuur, identiteit, landelijkheid en regionaliteit. Via een focus group en een interview is er data verzameld. Hieruit volgde dat het dorp in Twente met zijn lokale cultuur, identiteit, regionaliteit en dorpse karakter zorgde voor verbondenheid bij de volleybalsters met niet alleen elkaar maar ook hun omgeving. Dit liet zien hoe er in Twente sprake is van een lokale cultuur en waar de kracht van een dorp uit kan bestaan. Met de verbondenheid die de plaats met zijn cultuur, regionaliteit en landelijkheid meebracht beïnvloedde plaats de motivatie positief. Zo liet het zien hoe motivatie niet alleen tussen nationale culturen kan verschillen, maar ook tussen regionale culturen, dorp en stad.
In the region of Twente, the Netherlands, many clubs in villages play volleyball at a high level. Bale (1988) wrote that in the field of geography studying sports has a potential of expanding geographical knowledge of regions. This thesis seeks to contribute to fulfilling this potential. By use of the self determination theory for motivation a bridge is laid between sport science and geography, as a part of this theory writes how motivation can arise differently between cultures. This research examined how motivation arose for female volleyball players in the region of Twente and which influence place had on this. Place was defined by culture, identity and regionality in this thesis. Data was collected through a focus group and an interview. The data showed that the village in Twente with its local culture, identity and regionality not only provided for relatedness between players but also a relatedness with place. This showed that there is a local culture in Twente and what the strengths of a village can be. The relatedness that followed from the place with its culture and regionality positively influenced the motivation for the female volleyball players. This showed how motivation not only differs between national cultures, but also between regionale cultures and how regionality plays a part in this.
