Abstract
Insects in the Netherlands are in heavy decline due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Conventional nature conservation has turned out to be not enough to solve this problem. Instead, the scope must shift to agricultural and urban areas. Nature based solutions could be a way to integrate insect conservation in these landscapes, as they are meant to solve both social and environmental issues at the same time using nature. This thesis has explored the following research question: what are the institutional opportunities and barriers of insect conservation in nature based solutions in Gelderland? In order to answer this, a case study on a nature based solution, Park Lingezegen, has been conducted using the policy arrangement approach. The biggest opportunities for insect conservation in nature based solutions lie in the incorporation of insect conservation into other functions like agriculture, recreation, landscape preservation and water safety. The biggest barrier lies in the need for smooth cooperation between governmental bodies and the way they create room for bottom-up initiatives that promote insect conservation. This means that nature conservation policy makers in the Netherlands should consider nature based solutions as a means to reverse insect decline, keeping in mind these opportunities and barriers.
