Abstract
In this article, I take issue with proposals that advocate overcoming the crisis of political
representation by democratizing structures of representation as to include the people in
processes of decision-making. These accounts, I argue, neglect taking into account the depoliticizing
neoliberal transformations of liberal democratic government and its subjects. I
argue that horizontalizing representation can be a means of re-politicization – as part of a more
fundamental project of re-politicizing society and life – but must not be taken as a sufficient
goal in itself. Rather, I argue that our primary focus should be on re-politicizing spaces to
facilitate the generation of political thought and action and thus allow for the re-politicization
of subjects capable of bearing the responsibility of inclusive forms of representation.
