Abstract
In the Dutch health care sector, 44% of the employees experienced high to very high work pressure in their work (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek 2019a). This can have consequences for both the patients and the employees themselves. Existing literature investigated the experienced work pressure among health care employees but focussed mainly on the hospital employees. Until now, no researcher investigated the work pressure among care center employees. This research has collected data from health care employees of one care center using a single case study design to discover the experiences of work pressure from care center employees. The aim was to get insight in the experiences of work pressure of health care employees in care centers. This to contribute to the knowledge on work pressure in the health care sector and to eventually make recommendations towards the HR department of the mother organization and the manager of the care center about optimizing their policy regards work pressure. This research followed the research question: ‘’How do care center employees experience work pressure?’’. The researcher answered the this research question using thirteen semi-structured interviews with care center employees from one care center and two policy documents. By means of these data collection methods different views on work pressure could be discovered. The data of the researcher showed that how often and when care center employees experience work pressure differs. The data showed that when care center employees experience work pressure depends on (individual) aspects such as the group of clients, temporary rooms and unforeseen circumstances. Due to these different aspects work pressure can be seen as a fluid concept. The data of the researcher also showed that there are four stressors and sub-categories that cause work pressure among care center employees. These stressors are organizational stressors, employee-related stressors, client-related stressors and family-related stressors. Last, a few perceived consequences of work pressure were found. By gathering insights of the experiences with work pressure among care center employees and comparing them to the insights of existing literature, this research has contributed to existing literature about work pressure.
