Abstract
The EuroParcs organization operates in a highly uncertain and unpredictable environment. As the EuroParcs organization has the ambition to grow towards the industry’s absolute top, the organization wants to increase their controllability in order to be able to respond to the complex environment. In order to diagnose the organization’s structure, the sociotechnical systems design approach of De Sitter (2000) is used as theoretical framework. After conducting semi-structured interviews, it became apparent that the degree of controllability is negatively affected by the way the organization is structured. Specifically, the production structure of the organization is problematic. The high degree of parameter 1 and 2 causes a complex network of interdependent tasks which causes an unbalanced degree of controllability. A focus group was held in order to discuss alternatives for redesigning EuroParcs. However, during the focus group, two main discussions have taken place. Employees of EuroParcs have conflicting and contradictory viewpoints regarding centralizing or decentralizing the organization and also regarding whether to integrate the two primary processes; development and exploitation. This seems to be an indication of an underlying, more fundamental problem: a conflicting business model, which might be the cause for the problematic controllability in relation to the organizational structure.
