The Association between the Impact of Negative Major Life Events and Work Ability, and the Moderating roles of Maintenance and Accommodative HR practices

Abstract
All individuals will experience negative major life events throughout their lives (e.g. the death of a loved one or getting fired). However, little is known about these events and their impact on work ability. Moreover, little is known about how to mitigate the impact of these events. Therefore, this study examines the association between the impact of negative major life events, both in private life and at work, and work ability, and the moderating roles of maintenance and accommodative HR practices on this association. A cross-sectional analysis with the use of an online questionnaire was conducted among 303 Dutch employees who received consistent work and payment from an employer. Results showed that the impact of negative major life events in private life and at work were negatively associated with work ability, and that the use of maintenance HR practices weakened the negative association between the impact of negative major life events in private life and work ability. Contrary to the expectations, the use of accommodative HR practices did not weaken any association.
