Abstract
Currently, the process of burning paddy straw in India, has negative impact on the social, environmental and economic perspective for the local farmers. With globally increasing environmental awareness and developing interest in the circular economy, innovators are exploring the options to use crop residues productively. Recently, MVO Nederland started a project to the valorisation or upcycling the crop residues in India, the area of Haryana and Punjab, with the goal to establish the first successful circular business model for paddy straw upcycling in India. In this research, the central research question is: “What are potential opportunities, set off against potential risks, for farmers in the region of Punjab and Haryana in India, when the burning of paddy straw is avoided and there is chosen for a circular solution?” The aim of this research is to identify the opportunities when the rice straws will not be burned anymore and in contrast there is chosen for an alternative way to deal with the agricultural waste. The focus will be on circular solutions, this because the paddy straw is a potentially valuable resource for high-end reuse and upcycling.
