Abstract
In order to reduce climate change, goals have been set to create a more sustainable and carbon neutral society. This requires a more sustainable energy system, which is based on renewable energy sources. In the Netherlands the transition towards renewable energy has gained increased attention in national policies, such as the Energy Agreement, the Climate Agreement and the Climate Act. The energy transition will also compromise the establishment of more onshore wind parks. This will have strong spatial and environmental impacts. Thus, it is no wonder that wind parks in the Netherlands have faced strong local resistance. In new policies, public participation and local ownership of wind projects becomes increasingly important. However, only little research has been executed on the effect of local ownership on the development of wind projects in the Netherlands. Additionally, this research focuses on the effect of familiarity with wind turbines on the development of wind projects in the Netherlands.
