Abstract
Given that organizational change often fails, design intervention methods are needed to guide organizations through this process of change. However, a scientifically just description and assessment is lacking for various of these methods. Therefore, in this study the two methods of Design Thinking and the 3-D model are described and assessed specifically as methods which support episodic interventions within organizational infrastructures. A new metamodel which consists of thirteen scientifically grounded variables is created to enable researchers to analyse this kind of methods. After selecting the relevant literature to analyse, both Design Thinking and the 3-D are described and assessed along these variables. From the analysis it appears that although both methods are appropriate as a method supporting episodic interventions in organizational infrastructures, the 3-D model is the most appropriate method. Both methods could learn from each other, and the reader is advised to also search for other methods which dive deeper into the HR and technology aspect of the infrastructure, and which look at the different power relations in organizations. The research not only delivers a theoretical contribution by delivering a metamodel and analysis which fill gaps in the literature, but also gives the practical field insight into these methods.
