Abstract
The English language has become more and more important in higher education in the Netherlands as well as Europe (Booij, 2001; Coleman, 2006; Sharifian, 2017; Education First, 2018). Universities often offer a wide range of courses and programmes in English. Research shows that students can have difficulties understanding lectures due to either the teacher’s language ability or their own (Doiz, et al. 2011). Diagnostic language testing could help prevent students failing courses due to language inability(Lydster & Brown, 2017). In this study, The RADAr English, a diagnostic English language test designed for first year university students, was tested for reliability as well as validity. The results show that the RADAr is suitably reliable as well as suitably valid. Some suggestions for further research have been made as well as a cautious suggestion for a Caesura for the RADAr test.
