Abstract
The world is increasing its focus on sustainability. This includes food, environmental and societal sustainability. Aquaculture can contribute to a sustainable world if the push to more sustainability is accepted throughout the sector. In the Netherlands however the transformation in the production sector is lacking behind the transformation of the retail sector. How is the institutional framework in the Netherlands influencing entrepreneurship in the sustainable aquaculture sector is thus the question. The institutional framework in the Netherlands is favorable towards entrepreneurship in general. The institutional framework is less favorable towards the factors of Tisdell for the development of sustainable aquaculture production in the Netherlands. The institutional barriers affecting the development of sustainable aquaculture in the Netherlands are regulative in the form of entry barriers and regulations and normative in the lack of species covered by the ASC-certificate. The barriers both regulative and normative do contradict the wish of the aquaculture producers in the Netherlands who deem sustainability as one important which is reflected in the production process.
