Abstract
Public transport systems often are proven to be inefficient, expensive and unreachable for certain social groups in a society. The research tries to map the accessibility of University Hospitals (UMC’s) by public transport while taking different income groups in account in seven city regions in the Netherlands. Accessibility was measured by ways of the travel time (in minutes) from a ‘Postcode vier cijfers’ (PC4) area inside the city region towards the PC4 area which contains the main entrance of the UMC. The ‘Potential Mobility Index’ (PMI) was also used as an accessibility measure and shows the efficiency of the transport system. The quantitative data analyse showed that people in the lowest income group lived on an average closer to the UMC which caused their average travel times by public transport to be lower than people living in higher income groups. The low travel time also caused a lower average PMI for low income groups, which means that transport systems for low income groups function less efficient. Future research could be done in areas which have a clearer divide between poor and rich compared to the Netherlands since the differences in average travel time and PMI were minimal.
