Abstract

This study looked at the usefulness for the use of gestures in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) processes. Previous research has found evidence for the help of iconic gestures for specific aspects of a language such as word learning. However, another gesture type such as beats has not been widely investigated before with regard to word learning in SLA. By the use of an experiment, this research found that iconic gestures are more useful than beat gestures for word learning aspects in SLA. No difference has been found between the use of gestures and no gestures for word learning in SLA. To conclude, this study has showed that if people gesture for word learning in SLA it is useful to use iconic gestures.
