Abstract
The underlying research question of this paper is to quantitatively asses and investigate if research on subjective well-being measures has penetrated the mainstream of economics, its most influential journals. It also aims to investigate the trend of usage of subjective well-being measures and research in the whole economic discourse. It presents a short literature review of the developments and major issues in the field of Happiness Economics. It proceeds by laying out the research question and methods used, motivated by previous similar research. Moreover, to quantitatively asses the question this paper presents an analysis of the usage of key terms in “happiness economics”, focusing on academic papers, written in English, in the field of economics. With the argued shortcomings of GDP, subjective well-being, as a nonmonetary alternative indicator to measure human flourishing has had its impact on the economic discourse. There is an increasing trend in the research on subjective well-being measures in the economics discourse. Nevertheless, despite the increasing interest in the economic discourse, the data presented in this paper is not evident to conclude that such research has become part of the mainstream of economics.
