Abstract
Most of the Moluccans in the Netherlands did not migrate there voluntarily. Being brought to the Netherlands as a temporary solution in the 1950’s, integration proved to be difficult at first. For the first twenty years, neither the Moluccans or the Dutch government saw this situation as permanent. On top of that, the Moluccans felt betrayed by the Dutch. They were promised an independent Moluccans state. However, the Dutch could no longer provide this. This made integration for the Moluccans difficult and they were not really helped by the Dutch state for a long time. Most of the Moluccans felt distinctly Moluccan and could not or did not want to return to the Moluccan islands which were now part of Indonesia. This beforementioned sense of betrayal caused the second generation of Moluccans to take actions against the Dutch state, culminating in several terrorist attacks. This thesis analyses the identity of the Moluccans living in the Netherlands. With a special focus on the influence the Dutch actions had on this identity. And it tries to spot differences between the generations Moluccans in the Netherlands.
