Abstract
On the 23rd of June, 2016, the people of the United Kingdom decided to leave the European Union in a referendum. The consequences of this decision were unknown. Now, two years after the referendum, the Irish border appeared to be one of the biggest struggles of the Brexit negotiations. This thesis tries to find out what the influence of Brexit is on the future of the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. First, different types of borders are distinguished, used for different future scenarios. Then, the future scenarios are analysed to see what the possible consequences could be. With interviews in Northern Ireland, scientific literature, reports and news articles, the future possibilities for the Irish border are examined. The history of the Irish border is a turbulent one and this has its influence on the current border. Brexit could trigger a return to those old times. Division between unionists and nationalists, and perhaps even violence, could return. That’s why the importance of a good solution to the border-problem is stressed as one of the main conclusions of the thesis. But until now, a solution has still not been found.
