Abstract
Cities are the future. Whereas only 39% of the people lived in cities in 1980 (Da Silva, Kenaghan & Luque, 2012, p.125), the number rose to 52% in 2011 (Da Silva, Kenaghan & Luque, 2012, p.125) and is expected to rise to 70% in 2050 (Da Silva, Kenaghan & Luque, 2012, p.125). Cities are also getting more vulnerable: Man-made climate change is causing increased health risks for city residents. Every city resident deserves a healthy environment to live in: An attractive physical environment which promotes healthy behaviour. With the introduction the Planning and Environment Act in 2021, society is officially promoting a bottom-up approach to planning to solve the problem. To relief the city from the health risks imposed by climate change, several bottom-up initiatives are already active in the city through the cooperation of residents, companies, organisations and parts of the government. Whereas most of the projects focus on adapting the city to climate change, the projects also have additional positive impacts. The research investigates the impact of these bottom-up climate initiatives on creating an overall healthy environment in the city.
