Abstract
Smart mobility and sustainable mobility are two dominant concepts in urban planning and in academic research nowadays. Both concepts show some similarities but also have differences. As a result of this, multiple relations between these concepts can emerge. This thesis explores these relations and explains them from different theoretical perspectives on smart mobility. A multiple case study, executed in Eindhoven and Utrecht, explores how these emerge and how smart mobility is governed in practice. The research into these local contexts provides us with insights about sustainability ambitions with regard to smart mobility initiatives and about the different roles local governments can play. Eventually, this thesis argues that local governments should embrace a vision in which sustainability is the core principle and that smart mobility is a means to an end.
