Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the acoustic parameters that characterize the speech of hypokinetic dysarthria or spastic dysarthria. Method: Ten speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria, two speakers with spastic dysarthria and five neurological healthy controls participated in this study. Using two reading tasks, semantically unpredictable sentences and various standardized reading material, the following measures were used: fundamental frequency (F0), variability of fundamental frequency (F0.SD), articulation rate, center of gravity (CoG), delta intensity (ΔI), harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), standardized vowel area space (ZVSA), F1a/F1i ratio, and the F2i/F2u ratio. Results: In this study significant differences were found between groups for articulation rate, CoG, and the F2i/F2u ratio. A significant difference was found for F0.SD, only if two monotonously reading controls were excluded. Discussi! on & Conc lusion: The articulatory measures were found to be most affected in dysarthric speech. These results are in accordance with findings from earlier studies.
