Abstract
We have entered an age in which urban life is more popular than even, the economy is steamrolling again, and housing prices are exploding. This results in an urban middle class who have no access to the social housing sector but are also unable to afford the rising prices of rental- and owner-occupied housing. The aim of this research is to study the position of (semi)public- and private actors operating within the Dutch housing market regarding this increasing pressure on the middle class and the future of their urban life. The study suggests that the mid-rental market currently looks like a ‘no man’s land’ in which housing corporations are only allowed to develop a certain mid-rental supply and private firms are also lacking actions while developing within the more expensive housing segments result in a higher profit for them. The fate of the middle class seems to be sealed while they are pushed out of the cities. The increasing awareness of social duty within private firms and the possible increase of the responsibilities of the housing corporations regarding the mid-rental market could however be the savior of the urban middle class and their future of living within the Dutch cities.
