Smart transport for everyone? Exploring the influence of Breng flex on the accessibility of elderly people

Abstract
Breng flex is a Demand Responsive Service (DRT) in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, which was created to explore the possibilities of an app-based, bus stop-to-bus stop on the transport network of the city. However, the impact on demographic groups with a lower accessibility is not known. This thesis focuses on the research question “How does the introduction of a digitized demand responsive transport service affect the accessibility of elderly people?”, by analyzing an existing dataset on mobility behavior, surveying elderly people, and interviewing experts in the field. The first result was that elderly people experience a lower mobility than the general population. The second result was that Breng flex in theory would seem like a great solution to the transportation needs of elderly people. However, because the service drives from bus stop-to-bus stop, the perceived upsides (no transfers, easy booking) were rendered useless. This was the biggest factor limiting the accessibility of elderly people, is their inability to reach bus stops independently. This means that services like Breng flex do not improve accessibility for elderly people, as long as they are bus stop-to-bus stop.
